Stollenmädchen 2008

Todays story is about a kind of cake, we are eating during christmas. You propably know it from the store or you got somthing simelar. But the "Dresdner Christstollen" is the original one! The others are just fruit cakes.
In the gallery you see one picture of it.

THE STORY: Already mentioned in a document in 1329. Then it was given to the bishop Heinrich in Naumburg an der Saale. In Dresden itself it was first mentioned in 1474 as a "christmas bread". Due to a ecclesiastical butter prohabition, the cake was made without butter. 36 years later the pope allowed the Dresden bakers to use more then just flour. So Butter was added. In 1500 the „Christbrote uff Weihnachten“ was sold on the Striezelmarkt. Germanys oldest market of its kind. Due of an event in 1730, when August the Strong (King of Poland/Elector of Saxony) request a giant Stollen, that till today a annual "Stollenfest" is celebrated. The bakers prepare a giant Stollen (pictures), which outbid always the previous one. On that occasion a "Stollenmädchen" is elected to present the Dresden bakers. By the way, the true receipe is kept secret till now and just the original Dresden bakers are allowed to bake and name this kind of Stollen "Original Dresdner Stollen"!

That was todays story, I Kiss you and I promise, I'm going to eat with you one or two pieces of that delicious Stollen. In my family Stollen is mainly eaten around the christmas days, well around the 24th.
